Creating a Cali-Boho Chic Look

Toes in the sand, a dip in the sparkling ocean, relaxing under the bright, sunny, sky, with a warm breeze in the trees. The California Bohemian style captures that vibe perfectly.  It’s relaxed, fun and inviting.   Here’s how we created it in our clients’ family room and kitchen.

A light neutral base with pops of color

To get the breezy, coastal, casual color palette that is a signature of the California boho style, we started with a neutral color palette of white, ivory, tan and taupe. We added blue for that fresh, beachy look.  Unfinished, white oak paired with the matte black hardware created a nice contrast, adding interest to the space.

Texture, texture, and more texture

Any boho style home is not complete without some wickers or wovens. The materials of the table, chairs and barstools are natural, raw and organic bring visual depth and approachability to a space. The woven rugs, sofa and chair textiles soften the space and creating a layered, effortless look.

Pattern

The patterns found in the backsplash tile and the tile of the fireplace bring vibrancy and movement to the space. They’re also a great way to bring in that globally inspired vibe that boho designs are known for. Bonus points here for also adding color!

Rugs, pillows and throws

These fabric pieces bring texture, pattern, color and style to the space, not to mention they are just plain cozy.  Tassels and fringes add a bit of fun.

Greenery

There is nothing more California than bringing the outdoors in.  We added sculptural plants, herbs and loose arrangements of flowers. We scavenged eucalyptus leaves or bougainvillea on walks – no not from neighbor’s yards.   We even cheated a bit and went faux in some places.

Quirky pieces

We included whimsical touches in the styling accessories that are personal to the clients…. the metal swan from grandma, a small painting by the daughter, favorite books and some collected pottery pieces. It’s a great style for blending vintage with pieces from travel or bits and pieces found in nature.

It was so much fun to work on this project with great clients.  The spaces say welcome, come on in, chill out, and enjoy yourself!
